What is a summary?

A summary is a shorter passage which keeps only the important points.
 

Why do we need to summarise?

Knowing how to summarise is very useful to your study.  When you summarise a passage:

    - it is easier to remember what you have been reading
    - you can make sure you really understand it
    - you can note down the key points for future use
    - you use your own words to express the ideas, and avoid copying others' work.

Read this paragraph.
 

    The territory of Hong Kong consists of Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon Peninsula, the New Territories, and 235 outlying islands, totalling 1,078 square kilometres.  It is situated on the southeastern coastline of China, facing the South China Sea.  To its north is the province of Guangdong, the provincial capital of Guangzhou, which is 135 km away from Hong Kong. China's capital city, Beijing, is about 2,000 km further north. The territory measures 38 km from north to south and 50 km from east to west.
